The Equal Rights Amendment is within reach— if we demand action.

Here’s what we need to do together:

• Educate our communities. Most Americans believe women already have equal constitutional rights—but they do not. The ERA is not blocked by constitutional barriers; it has been delayed by political games. Constitutional scholars, the American Bar Association, and nearly 400 organizations in the ERA Coalition recognize that the Equal Rights Amendment is the 28th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The missing ingredient is political will.
Build a movement too powerful to ignore. Help gather one million signatures to demonstrate overwhelming public support for equal rights and deliver that message to leaders in Washington, D.C.
Demand Congress Act. Contact candidates and elected officials. Let them know that as constituents, we expect Congress to act on the Equal Rights Amendment immediately when the new Congress convenes.

Zonta ERA Action

Today – Nov 3

NOV 4:

  • Write Congress:   Equal Rights = Better future  ERA in the First 100 Days.

    • Women’s Rights and LGBTQ Rights are a National Priority
    • Easy Win (no veto)

Plus

Congress Must ACT to Recognize the ERA.

We can ELECT a PRO-EQUALITY Congress in November, and demand they affirm the ERA thru Joint Resolution in the first 100 days.

Take Action NOW – Build a Better Future

Our goal is to have the ERA recognized as the 28th Amendment to the US Constitution in the first 100 days of a new seated Congress in 2027.   – April 13, 2027.

Most Americans believe gender equality, and women’s rights are already guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution. They are not.

The Equal Rights Amendment has been ratified by 38 states and cleared every constitutional requirement for an amendment.

Yet it remains unpublished, unrecognized, and unenforceable — not because of law, but because of politics.

The Status of the ERA Today
The ERA has cleared every constitutional bar Article V specifies. Congress passed it with a two-thirds supermajority in 1972 in both the House and the Senate. Thirty-eight states — three-fourths of the nation — ratified it, with Virginia becoming the crucial 38th state on January 27, 2020. By every measure the Constitution sets, the amendment process is complete.

Yet the ERA remains unaffirmed by Congress. Opponents are using an arbitrary deadline inserted into the 1972 preamble of the amendment — not into the text of the amendment itself — to argue the ratification window has closed.

The ERA coalition, including Zonta USA Caucus has determined that the path to resolution runs through Congress.
Congress needs the courage to say what the Constitution already makes clear — that the Equal Rights Amendment is the law of the land. One vote. One historic act of courage. That’s all that stands between where we are and where we need to be.

Article V Ratification Checklist
✓ ⅔ Vote in the House of Representatives — Passed 1972
✓ ⅔ Vote in the Senate — Passed 1972
✓ Ratification by ¾ of States (38) — Virginia, January 27, 2020
⏳ Congressional Joint Resolution — PENDING: S.J. Res. 38 / H.J. Res. 80

The House Judiciary Committee and the Senate Rules committee will be critical to the procedural elements.  You will be contacted if your club members are in a district of one of these important players.

The House Judiciary Committee Sets the Schedule, and will need to get the ERA on the first 100 Days Agenda

I strongly support the Equal Rights Amendment to the United States Constitution as the 28th Amendment which reads:

Equality of Rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any state on account of sex.

The ERA passed Congress with the needed 2/3rd vote of the United States House and Senate as well as the legislatures of the needed 38 states.

Congress must immediately recognize the Equal Rights Amendment and pass the  United States House and Senate resolutions – Sign the Petition and help the ERA Coalition get to a million signatures in 2023!

ERA Talking Points from the ERA Coalition

A democracy where over half the population has no constitutional guarantee of equal treatment is a democracy falling short of its own promise

The Equal Rights Amendment isn’t a side issue — it’s foundational.

“Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.”

What the Equal Rights Amendment Can Do –

That one sentence would:

  • Close the loophole — explicitly prohibit sex-based discrimination at the highest level of U.S. law
  • Protect everyone — women, girls, gender-diverse and nonbinary people, LGBTQ+ individuals, men, boys — anyone experiencing sex-based discrimination
  • Create a permanent, enforceable foundation for gender equality— ensuring gender equality is not subject to shifting court interpretations or changing political majorities   …. and more. Read the talking points on the ERA
