The table I provided was a strategic assessment based on a combination of platform usage data, advocacy practitioner experience, and media ecosystem trends. It was not intended as a direct ranking from a single published source. For a report, board presentation, or strategy document, I would support it with the following evidence base.

United States

Bluesky and journalists

Bluesky has become a significant gathering place for journalists, academics, researchers, and advocacy organizations after the fragmentation of X/Twitter. While comprehensive audience data is still emerging, many major newsrooms and reporters have established active presences there.

LinkedIn and policy influence

LinkedIn remains particularly strong among policymakers, nonprofit executives, foundation staff, academics, and corporate leaders.

Northern Europe

LinkedIn’s unusually strong position

Countries such as Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and the Netherlands consistently show among the highest professional networking adoption rates in Europe. LinkedIn plays a larger role in public affairs, policy discussion, and nonprofit leadership communications than it does in Southern Europe. This is reflected in high professional and institutional adoption rates.

Southern Europe

Facebook and WhatsApp remain dominant for mobilization

Countries such as Spain, Italy, Portugal, and Greece continue to rely heavily on Facebook and WhatsApp for civic engagement, organizing, and local community activity.

• Reuters Institute Digital News Report

South Korea

The strongest evidence is available here.

Japan

The evidence for Japan is somewhat different because social media behavior is unusually unique compared with other OECD countries.

X (formerly Twitter)

Japan remains one of the world’s strongest markets for X, with ongoing research specifically focused on Japanese X users. Studies continue to identify exceptionally high engagement on the platform compared with many Western countries.

LINE

LINE remains the dominant messaging and community platform in Japan and is deeply integrated into public communication, government services, nonprofit outreach, and daily life.

• LINE Corporation Official Statistics
• Japan Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications ICT Reports

YouTube and Instagram

Both remain major channels, especially for younger audiences. Recent reporting on Japanese Gen Z media habits shows LINE, Instagram, X, and YouTube as central parts of daily digital life.

Philippines

This is the clearest case of Facebook-centric advocacy.

Facebook

Facebook remains extraordinarily dominant in the Philippines. According to Digital 2026 reporting, 94.9% of Filipino internet users reported using Facebook monthly. Filipinos are among the heaviest Facebook users globally.

YouTube

85% of internet users reported using YouTube monthly, among the highest rates globally.

Messenger

Messenger’s integration with Facebook makes it one of the most important organizing and communication tools in the country.

Political advocacy

Multiple Reuters investigations into election campaigns, disinformation, and political organizing identify Facebook, Messenger, TikTok, and related Meta ecosystems as central venues for political influence and civic engagement.

Sources I would rely on for a nonprofit social media strategy report

If you are preparing a board presentation or communications strategy, I would cite these as the primary authorities:

1. DataReportal Global Digital Reports
2. Reuters Institute Digital News Report
3. Pew Research Center Social Media Research
4. Eurostat Digital Society Statistics
5. OECD Digital Economy Outlook
6. Korea Press Foundation Media Research
7. Japan Ministry of Internal Affairs ICT Statistics

For a nonprofit advocacy organization such as the ERA Coalition or Zonta International, DataReportal + Reuters Institute + country-specific media studies would be sufficient to support strategic platform recommendations in a formal plan.
