Zonta: A powerful voice for women and girls at the UN CSW
Zonta International’s presence at the 62nd Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW62) at the United Nations in March was stronger than ever this year. More than 70 Zontians from 15 countries were in attendance and a full schedule of events, including four side events co-hosted with Member States of the UN, two parallel events and a screening of the documentary, Little Stones. A common theme emerged throughout these Zonta-sponsored events: To end child marriage and other traditional practices that negatively impact the lives of women and girls, particularly rural women and girls, and to empower them to realize a different future for themselves, we must address the root causes of gender inequality – lack of quality education, little or no economic opportunities, lack of laws or enforcement of laws that protect the rights of women and girls, and social and cultural norms that perpetuate harmful practices.
