ZONTA SAYS NO TO VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN CAMPAIGN

25 November-10 December 2021

During the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, all Zonta clubs and districts are encouraged to take part in the Zonta Says NO to Violence Against Women campaign and to take local, national and international actions to influence the making and implementation of laws, as well as changing gender-based attitudes and behaviors to end violence against women.

INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE ELIMINATION OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

Women’s rights activists have observed 25 November as a day against gender-based violence since 1981. This date was selected to honor the Mirabal sisters, three political activists from the Dominican Republic who were brutally murdered in 1960 by order of the country’s ruler, Rafael Trujillo. On 7 February 2000, the General Assembly adopted resolution 54/134, officially designating 25 November as the International day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and in doing so, inviting governments, international organizations as well as NGOs to join together and organize activities designed to raise public awareness of the issue every year on that date.

ZONTA SAYS NO TO VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN SUMMIT

This Giving Tuesday, Zonta International is hosting a one-day online summit to share how as a society we can come together and say NO to violence against women and girls.  Join us to hear live guest speakers, participate in interactive workshops and leave with life-changing actions you can take. Together, we can make the world safer for women and girls now and in future generations. Admission is US$10 per person, with all proceeds going to the Zonta Foundation for Women International Service Fund to support global initiatives to address gender-based violence. Members who participatewill have this donation count toward their Every Member Every November Zonta Foundation for Women giving total.

HUMAN RIGHTS DAY

Human Rights Day is observed every year on 10 December—the day the United Nations General Assembly adopted, in 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). The UDHR is a milestone document that proclaims the inalienable rights which everyone is entitled to as a human being—regardless of race, color, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth, or other status.

AMELIA EARHART MONTH

1-31 January 2022

Each January, we celebrate the life and legacy of Zontian and famed aviator Amelia Earhart. It is also an opportunity to raise funds for the Zonta International Amelia Earhart Fellowship Fund, which has supported more than 1,600 women from 75 countries in reaching their educational and professional goals in the aerospace and space sciences fields since 1938.

AMELIA EARHART DAY

11 January 2022

Amelia Earhart Day recognizes the day Amelia began her solo trip from Honolulu, Hawaii, to Oakland, California. This flight made her the first person to fly to the United States mainland from Hawaii. Since she had flown over the Atlantic Ocean five years earlier, it also made her the first person to fly across both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans.

The International Day of Education celebrates the role of education for peace and development. UNESCO, as the specialized United Nations agency for education, facilitates the annual observance of the Day in close collaboration with main education actors.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF ZERO TOLERANCE TO FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION

In 2012, the UN General Assembly designated February 6th as the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), with the aim to amplify and direct the efforts on the elimination of this practice. FGM comprises all procedures that involve altering or injuring the female genitalia for non-medical reasons and is recognized internationally as a violation of the human rights, the health and the integrity of girls and women

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF WOMEN AND GIRLS IN SCIENCE

A significant gender gap has persisted throughout the years at all levels of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines all over the world. Even though women have made tremendous progress towards increasing their participation in higher education, they are still under-represented in these fields. In 2015, the General Assembly adopted a resolution to establish the International Day of Women and Girls in Science to recognize the critical role women and girls play in science and technology communities.

WORLD DAY OF SOCIAL JUSTICE

Established in 2007, the World Day of Social Justice recognizes the need to promote social justice, which includes efforts to tackle issues such as poverty, exclusion, gender inequality, unemployment, human rights and social protections.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY AND ZONTA ROSE DAY

International Women’s Day (IWD) is a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women, who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities. Celebrated alongside IWD, Zonta Rose Day gives people an opportunity to reflect on past achievements and honor the current efforts of champions for gender equality by donating to the Zonta Foundation for Women.

SIXTY-SIXTH SESSION OF THE COMMISSION ON THE STATUS OF WOMEN (CSW66)

14-25 March 2022

Representatives of Member States, UN entities, and ECOSOC-accredited non-governmental organizations (NGOs) from all regions of the world are invited to attend the session.

• Priority theme: Achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls in the context of climate change, environmental and disaster risk reduction policies and programs.
• Review theme: Women’s economic empowerment in the changing world of work (agreed conclusions of the sixty-first session).

INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE RIGHT TO THE TRUTH CONCERNING GROSS HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS AND FOR THE DIGNITY OF VICTIMS

The International Day for the Right to the Truth Concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims pays tribute to the memory of Monsignor Óscar Arnulfo Romero, who was murdered on 24 March 1980. Monsignor Romero was actively engaged in denouncing violations of the human rights of the most vulnerable individuals in El Salvador.

INTERNATIONAL DAY TO END OBSTETRIC FISTULA

The International Day to End Obstetric Fistula promotes action towards treating and preventing obstetric fistula, a condition that affects many girls and women in developing countries. Obstetric fistula is a hole in the birth canal caused by prolonged labor without prompt medical intervention, such as a Caesarean section. It leaves women with incontinence problems, and often leads to chronic medical problems, depression, social isolation and deepening poverty.
