Editorial: Set these rights in stone
Democrats pushed an Equal Rights Amendment onto New York’s ballot this year. In the face of vigorous conservative opposition, they need to follow through.

“New York protects a wide range of people from discrimination, but residents might be surprised to learn those protections could be changed on a political whim.
That’s because they exist, for the most part, not in the state constitution but in state law — which is much easier to change.
Rights should not be vulnerable to the prevailing political winds or shifting ideologies of the judiciary. One has only to look at the diminishment of abortion rights at the hands of a conservative majority on the U.S. Supreme Court to recognize how risky it is to let laws and precedents stand in for clear constitutional protections.”
